WWBA 16U: Day 1 - Nick Williams
By: Micah Posey |

East Cobb - Today at Sprayberry I saw one of the most impressive displays of offense that I have ever seen at the high school level. Nick Williams from the Houston Banditos Black was 4 for 4 with 4 homeruns. I had to have been the only person who saw all 3 homeruns in one game from Trey Williams in the 17U Tournament and all 4 homeruns from Nick Williams in the 16U Tournament.  No doubt, "Williams" will be a popular name at the top of the list when Prospect Wire releases our national rankings of players from this summer.

Back to Nick:  At Sprayberry there is a bridge 20 ft above the fence in left field. The lefty would hit two opposite field homeruns to the top of the fence on the bridge. He would also hit two homeruns to right center. Williams has the best bat speed that I have seen in my 7 days here, that obviously including the 17U group. The 6"3" 195 lb outfielder graduates in 2012.  His body/build reminded me of Daryl Strawberry.  You could put this kid in a pro lineup right now, and you wouldn't be able to tell he was a high school kid from his body and batspeed.

On Tuesday I saw two of the better lineups here in the the Houston Banditos which features D1 bats up and down the lineup (Hinojosa,Dean,Comacho, Coker,Hernandez). The second lineup I saw was Bobby Valentine's All Americans. This lineup features atleast 4 D1 bats maybe more.

The two guys that stood out to me from Bobby Valentine's team were Fernelys Sanchez and Nelson Rodriguez. Both of these guys are pro prospects.

Sanchez is probably the best pro prospect of the two. Sanchez is a 6"4" 195 lb outfielder with plus speed and a pro body.  He reminded me a bit of Mike Cameron with his size, range in CF, etc.  Sanchez shows plus bat speed and a lot of power. Sanchez is a great defender in center field that will have a chance to play there in the big leagues. Sanchez a 2012 still has a ways to go as he is not real aggressive with the bat taking a lot of strikes and continually getting himself into 2 strike counts.

Nelson Rodriguez is a 6"2" 230 lb catcher. Nelson has plus plus power and a plus plus arm. When big Nelly hits the ball there is an explosion. The ball jumps off his bat. The best part is Rodriguez offensively stays in the middle of the field. Behind the plate Rodriguez receives well. His pop is a 2.01 but he has better. His footwork and transfer needs work but the arm makes up for everything.

After a long 8 days at East Cobb, I will be heading home to re-charge my batteries, and you can stay up-to-date with Anup Sinha's reports.
