Top 100 Event Features Panhandle's Top Talent
By: Micah Posey |

Panama City, FL - The top 100 is an invitation only event hosted the last 4 years by Gulf Coast Community College. This event has gone on to see 113 of its last 300 participants go on to play college baseball and typically features the top talent on the panhandle and southeast US area. The teams are divided into 4 regions starting in Pensacola going all the way into Jacksonville. The event is only for invited rising seniors in north Florida.  There is a wide range of baseball players and schools, Division 1 to Division 3 to Junior colleges from multiple states to many pro scouts, which make it a good event for both the colleges and players.

Steve Merchant, who is the event coordinator, has a simple philosophy and that is he wants to get the right kids and the right schools to the event to give the kids a chance to play at the next level. “This event exceeded my expectations and I really do feel like we got the right kids here,” Merchant said.

I would like to thank the Gulf Coast coaching staff (Steve Merchant, Mike Kandler, and Michael Murphree) for there hospitality and hard work to make this a quality event.

Here is my list of the top tools from my time there:

Best Arm: Roman Quinn

Best Speed: Roman Quinn (6.4)

Best Defensive: Mallex Smith

Best Hitter: Roman Quinn

Best Power: Leo Benjamin

I will provide my top 10 prospects with reports before the end of the day.
