SARASOTA, FL - The boy’s 14U championship was played this morning at the Orioles Ed Smith Stadium, and Chet Lemon’s Juice pulled out the victory over Score International.
Juice was lead by pitcher and 14U MVP Andrew Baker, the fourteen-year-old hard throwing lefty. Although Baker wont take all the credit himself admitting that his teammates do make some pretty incredible defensive plays behind him.
“They make great, great plays,” said Baker. “ESPN type plays.”
Baker told Prospect Wire this confidence in his defense allows him to pitch his best pitches into tight situations. Going to the breaking ball in 0-2 counts because his opponents couldn’t hit it.
The game was close going into the sixth inning, with Juice leading 3-1, but with the wear and tear of the tournament on Score International’s pitching staff, the sixth inning became too much. The bases got loaded up and the game quickly spiraled out of control ending in the bottom of the six, when the 11-1 lead invoked the mercy rule.
Chet Lemon, a long time major league veteran, was extremely proud of his team’s performance today. Lemon believes his years in the MLB and long coaching career definitely give his guys a leg up on the competition. He tries to instill the same work ethics in his players that he had, making them students of the game as well as great athletes.
